About Sogetsu Ikebana

Sogetsu Ikebana, founded by Sofu Teshigahara in 1927, revolutionises traditional Japanese flower arranging by embracing a modern, avant-garde approach. It encourages creativity and individuality, allowing practitioners to create sculptural arrangements and utilise unconventional materials.

Sogetsu Ikebana emphasises balance, movement, and harmony, transcending traditional boundaries to create dynamic and expressive arrangements. This art form is accessible to everyone, regardless of skill level, and promotes a deep connection with nature and the beauty of imperfection. The Sogetsu school is one of the prominent ikebana schools in Japan. It is represented in many cities around the world and the Christchurch branch was founded in 1980.

‘Ikebana is practised for the inner spiritual satisfaction gained from the doing of it. The teacher opens the door.

The student must find his own way. The way is ‘Kado’ the flower road and it is a road without end. It is a beautiful but tantalising road with many bends.’
