Ikebana Classes
Experience the modern elegance of Sogetsu Ikebana
Our classes follow the avant garde approach of the Sogetsu school; a fresh approach, balance, movement and harmony. This modern approach allows for expressive creations that move beyond traditional boundaries.
Students will initially be taught the fundamental principles of this art form. Through hands-on practice, you will learn to shape branches, leaves, and flowers into arrangements that reflect the beauty of nature and of your own character. Once the basic techniques have been mastered, students will be able to use this knowledge to develop their own creative ability in free expression arrangements.

‘Through Ikebana we see previously unimagined beauty in the forms of the materials we arrange, beauty we could not have created ourselves.’

This awareness of nature is meaningful in our high tech world and provides us with a sense of indulgence.
Emphasising sustainability, students are encouraged to forage for roadside materials which are afterwards returned to the whenua completing the cycle of nature. In addition, using discarded items as unconventional materials teaches the beauty of imperfection.
Beyond its aesthetic allure, Sogetsu Ikebana offers a cultural experience, inviting participants to connect deeply with Japanese heritage and symbolism. Arrangements embody themes of simplicity and the ephemeral nature of life that resonate on a spiritual level.
Our programme of lessons is set out in workbooks (1-5) which come from the Sogetsu headquarters in Tokyo. You work through each workbook at your own pace. Once you have completed Book 1 (20 lessons) you are able to join our STA group (Sogetsu Teachers Assoc) as a student member.
The STA comprises our members who have completed all 5 Books and thereby able to become teachers. The STA provides development and support to our teachers through workshops, exhibitions and other events. As a student member you will have the opportunity to take part in these activities.
